IWD – A reminder of the collective strength of women around the world

Shrewsbury High School is 140 years old, and at the heart of our mission…the belief that educating girls is not only a privilege but also a powerful force for change.

March 8th marks International Women’s Day, a wonderful opportunity to reflect on how far we have come, as a school, and as a society, in empowering girls. It also serves as a reminder of the vital role we all play in shaping a future where every girl can thrive.

For over a century, Shrewsbury High School has been at the forefront of providing an education that nurtures young women’s intellectual, emotional, and social growth. We are proud of our history and the many students who have passed through our doors, each leaving their unique mark on the world. Our all-girls environment has created a space where girls are encouraged to think freely, express themselves, aim high and above all, be curious and inspired.

We know that when girls are given the tools to succeed, they can achieve remarkable things. It’s not only about preparing them for exams or careers, but about empowering them to be confident, compassionate, and courageous leaders. Education is the cornerstone of progress, and we have always been committed to providing a foundation that allows each girl to flourish. Those foundations begin with our youngest students in Reception, who do not hold back with their enthusiasm and zest for all aspects of life at school and beyond the school gates and continue way-beyond graduation as our alumnae go on to lead and champion women in their chosen careers.

When we look at the incredible impact of girls’ education that all schools within the GDST family provide, it becomes clear that it is one of the most powerful ways to shape a better future for all.

Educated girls are more likely to pursue meaningful careers, break down societal barriers, and become advocates for change. The ripple effect of investing in a girl’s education extends far beyond her own life, benefiting families, communities, and entire nations.

We are deeply committed to not only ensuring that our students achieve academic excellence, but to ensuring that they are real world ready. Our innovative and dynamic Period X life-skills programme equips our students with the confidence, skills and inner-strength to contribute to shaping the world around them and be their own agent of change.

As we mark 140 years of Shrewsbury High School’s rich history, we also recognise the incredible importance that positive female role models have on our students. Those who demonstrate what is possible when hard work, passion, and determination come together. For girls to truly believe in their potential, they need to see others like them achieving greatness and we do not need to stray far beyond the global stage to find exactly that.

Our teachers, staff and alumnae are all vital sources of inspiration for our students. The women in our community show that success doesn’t come easily—it requires perseverance, resilience, and a willingness to embrace challenge. Our phenomenal female staff members are not just our students’ role models; they are mentors who help guide, support, and encourage the next generation of leaders.

International Women’s Day is a moment to celebrate how far we’ve come, whilst also recognising that there is still much work to do. For 140 years, Shrewsbury High has been dedicated to creating a space where girls are celebrated, empowered, and given the opportunity to reach their full potential. International Women’s Day is a reminder of the collective strength of women around the world, and it provides us with an important opportunity to reflect on how we can continue to shape a more inclusive and equal future for all. This year we celebrate not just the incredible women who have shaped our past, but also the bright, spirited, talented, and inspiring girls who will shape our future.

So, here’s to our past, our present, and a future full of limitless possibilities for every girl.
