More Able and Talented Programme

Celebrating and challenging the talents of our pupils

The SHS More Able and Talented Programme is designed to meet the learning needs of students of very high academic ability by providing a programme of enrichment from years 7-13.

The Scholars’ Programme aims to stretch and challenge our most academically able pupils so that they can maintain their enthusiasm for learning and engagement with studies.

We have the long-term goal of encouraging pupils to take greater ownership of their learning so that they may develop critical thinking skills beyond the requirements of GCSE and A-level.  A key outcome will be the ability to combine critical reading, reflection and discussion so that students will be better prepared for success at A-level, at university and in their chosen professors.

Criteria for Entry

SHS Scholars are pupils who meet the criteria of high intellectual aptitude and show consistent strengths across academic subjects.  Academic scholarships can be awarded at both 11+ and 13+ and into Sixth Form.

Specialist scholarships in Art, Drama, Music and Sport can be awarded at these same entry points.

An academic or specialist scholarship will follow a pupil throughout their time at Shrewsbury High; identification as an academically More Able and Talented student is more fluid and pupils can be added and removed at the end of an academic year following review.
