Friday 13th March 2026

There can be few better ways to end a week than preparing for a quiz.

As I write this introduction, I am brushing up on a few facts ahead of the upcoming Friends of Shrewsbury High School Quiz Night, which promises to be a perfect start to the weekend. It will be a wonderful opportunity for our community to come together, enjoy a little friendly competition, and perhaps discover who really has the sharpest general knowledge.

Quizzing, in truth, is something of a tradition at Shrewsbury High School. There is a strong culture of quizzes that runs through the school. Our Sixth Form students regularly challenge one another and are often impressively well informed across a remarkable range of subjects. Meanwhile, the staff room has been known to descend into spirited debate over everything from literature to geography and very often, sport. It is always reassuring, and sometimes slightly humbling, to realise just how much, or how little, one really knows.

So, in that spirit, I thought it only right to begin this week’s newsletter with a small challenge of our own. Below are three trivia questions. See how you get on before checking the answers at the bottom of the page.

Quiz Questions

  1. Which UK city has more canals than Venice?
  2. Which Shakespeare play features the characters Rosencrantz and Guildenstern?
  3. Who was the first player to be sent off in a FIFA World Cup final?

Have a lovely weekend.

Kate Millichamp, Head of Juniors and Whole School Deputy Head

The story of the Ramayana – Year 8 had fun in RPE re-enacting ‘our’ version of this exciting Hindu story

An exciting opportunity to explore the roles of avatars and what we learn as humans from the example of the gods? We asked why is this story so important in the Hindu tradition? The radio and tv adaptations have in the past brought India to a standstill when aired – why is the dramatization so powerful? What is the link to Divali?

Synopsis: A classic Hindu tale of good overcoming evil.

The hero, a prince called Rama, was married to a beautiful princess, called Sita. They had been banished to live in the forest with his brother, Lakshman, by his stepmother, as she wanted her son to be King. Ravana, the Demon king with ten heads, (ooooo!) heard of Sita’s beauty and goodness, and planned to kidnap her! , (yikes!)  By magic, he conjured up a golden fawn. She asked Rama to capture it…. So, he leaves her on her own, safe in the forest…. BUT! The demon king disguised himself as an old man and tricked Sita. (oh no!) He kidnaps her and flies away on his chariot back to his island, Lanka. Rama and Lakshman searched many months for Sita. Finally, they asked Hanuman – king of the monkey army -for help, because Hanuman could fly. Hanuman found Sita imprisoned on the island of Lanka. Hanuman, Rama and Lakshman prepared themselves for battle to rescue her. This was one of the greatest battles ever seen. (in the humanities department- with new swords!)  The fighting lasted for ten whole days. Good fought against evil…It looked as though Ravana was going to win, until Rama borrowed a special bow and arrow from the gods. Rama shot Ravana, rescued Sita and the battle was won. Good had beaten evil. Rama rescued Sita and they decided to go home. As it got dark, the people of the kingdom put out little oil lamps (divas) in their windows to show the way home.

Beautifully acted Year 8. Well done. Mrs Tonks and Mrs Adams

Sports Bra Fitting

We are delighted to inform you of our new partnership with PEBE, a specialist sports bra company, to deliver an educational talk and professional fitting session on 18th March 2026.

This session is designed to ensure all pupils have access to a properly fitted sports bra and to support the health, performance, and confidence of all our athletes.  All students will be expected to attend the educational talk, and time will be allocated for each student to take part in a measuring and fitting service (this is optional and over one layer of clothing).

The Education:

PEBE are passionate about educating women and girls on the importance of a well-fitting supportive sports bra and how to navigate shopping for a sports bra in a tricky market. The education covers topics such as:

  • Breast Biomechanics
  • The performance benefits of correct support
  • Understanding body literacy
  • Breast health
  • How to shop for a sports bra

The Sports Bras:

The sports bras are market leading in movement control, designed to support without compression and therefore improving comfort & reduced impact on breathing.  They are thoughtfully designed for growing bodies, with adjustable features to accommodate changes – each size typically fits across two cup sizes of fluctuation.  They offer supportive comfort and a personalised fit, ensuring athletes feel confident and ready to perform at their best.

We are so grateful to Mrs Causebrook for arranging this initiative and thank you for your support.
