Normally, not much. But yesterday, for World Book Day, they had everything in common, because, as we brought together the whole school from our Rising Fives to our Year 13s, SLT read extracts from their favourite children’s books in assembly with a level of theatrical flair rarely witnessed outside Ms Labbé’s PA.
These wild and wonderful stories remind us that reading can whisk us anywhere: through secret tollbooths, into enchanted factories, deep into courageous forests, across windswept moors, or into a barn where even the smallest creature can leave a big impression. Yesterday, our school travelled to all of those places at once, in one joyful, imaginative, slightly chaotic celebration.
Most importantly, we must share a huge thank you to our whole school community. The costumes that arrived at school, from both students and staff were absolutely brilliant; creative, detailed, and in some cases, so convincing that it took teachers a moment to work out who was underneath! The effort was phenomenal, from handmade props to last‑minute masterpieces crafted from whatever could be found, the enthusiasm made the day truly unforgettable.
Thank you for embracing the literary magic and we wish everyone a restful weekend…ideally with a good book and slightly fewer talking animals.
Have a lovely weekend.

Professor Robert Winston visits school.
When World Book Day and Careers Week collide on the eve of British Science week, there is no better man than Professor Robert Winston to join us at SHS for the most inspiring afternoon.
Professor Winston is a medical doctor, scientist, television presenter and Labour peer and took the time to travel up to Shrewsbury to speak to, and hear from, our students.
He began his visit by sitting down for an informal lunch with a group of our senior students to discuss subjects ranging from medical ethics to women in science, before presenting an interactive session on the wonders of science to junior pupils from year 3-6. His visit culminated with a talk in the New Hall to senior pupils and staff sharing his expertise and passion for medical collaboration and research and answering questions from the student audience.
Y10’s Maddie met Professor Winston at last Summers’ Hay Festival and invited him along to school. A day to remember!
Lizzie is a Winner!

Junior Swimming Gala by Bea, y6
On Thursday last week, nine SHS girls took part in a swimming gala at Shrewsbury School against local, Shropshire schools. It was such a fun day, and everyone tried their absolute best. We all did at least one race each and we had some brilliant results. Molly came first in her 50-metre freestyle heat, which was amazing and Clara did really well, coming third in her 25-metre freestyle heat.
I came second in my 25-metre breaststroke heat which I was really pleased with. In one of the 25-metre backstroke heats Betty came first place and Mara came first place in her 50-metre backstroke heat. Betty came first overall in the 25-metre backstroke heats which was a brilliant achievement. Betty said “everyone swam really well in the team. I was super proud of representing the school. Winning the race made me feel amazing”.
We were all really proud of how well we worked as a team and even though we were exhausted, we all had a great time.
Thank you to Mrs. Reece and Mrs. Brown for taking us and cheering us all on!
