At that age, careers felt simple and exciting – shaped by what we loved, shaped by what fascinated us, and shaped by what was right in front of us.
That seems like a very long time ago and now, for many of our students, thinking about a future career can feel far less straightforward. Some may have a clear idea of what they want to do, while others might not even know where to start and that’s absolutely fine and most importantly, absolutely normal! In fact, many of the jobs our children will one day do haven’t even been invented yet. In Mr Payne’s assembly this week he introduced us to some interesting and little-known careers; an ocularist, a water sommelier, a flavourist, an ethical hacker and a cryonicist to name but a few. And for us, what matters most is helping young people discover their interests, their strengths and their aspirations, and giving them the confidence to imagine a future full of possibility.
That’s why opportunities like our Aspire Careers Fair are so important. Taking place next Wednesday from 6–8pm in the Sports Hall, the event is designed to open doors, spark curiosity and show our students the many different paths they could take. And it is not just open to our students but to students and young people across the county and we are looking forward to seeing you there. By meeting professionals, hearing real stories, and asking questions, students can begin to see how learning today connects to life beyond school; even if their own ‘sweet shop dream’ is still waiting to be discovered.
Finally, we ended the week saying goodbye and good luck to our year 13 students as they head off on study leave ahead of their A-level exams. The qualities that make these brilliant young people so special are not measured by these exams and their futures are extremely bright, but as their focus turns in the short term to A levels we know they have worked hard and will do themselves proud. A letter to our Year 11s and Year 13s from Amit Mehta, ILG
Dear Students,
As exam season approaches, I’m writing to each of you across our schools to wish you the very best in your upcoming exams.
This time of year can bring a mixture of anticipation, pressure, and excitement, but I hope you take a moment to recognise just how much hard work, dedication, and perseverance you have already shown in reaching this point. The exams ahead are an opportunity to demonstrate all that you have learned and the effort you have invested, not a measure of your worth, but a reflection of your commitment and resilience.
Remember that success is not simply about results; it is about preparation, determination, and having the courage to give your very best. Trust in the work you have done, believe in your abilities, and approach each exam with confidence.
No matter what lies ahead, know that every member of staff across our schools is incredibly proud of you and is cheering you on. We believe in your potential and are excited to see all that you will achieve both in these exams and far beyond them. We are here to help and support you.
Take care of yourselves over the coming weeks: rest well, stay balanced, and remember that your well-being matters just as much as your academic performance.

141 Years Of Shrewsbury High School
Shrewsbury High School is 141! And what a year it has been since we celebrated our 140th birthday this time last year. As we move to coeducation in September 2026, we are proud of our heritage and excited for what is to come next.
This week we sat down to celebrate with Zara – our youngest student, and Esther and Martha – our joint oldest students!
